High-flying students were recognised at the fifth annual Construction Student Achievers of the Year award ceremony, which was held at Coleg Llandrillo Cymru’s £8.2m Marine & Built Environment Centre (MBEC) at the Rhos-on-Sea campus.

The awards – one of which was sponsored by Tarmaster Jones, were open to all Further Education (FE) and Higher Education (HE) technical students within the College’s Construction department. The panel, including tutors and fellow students, judged the students on criteria such as achievement, attendance and commitment over the year, before announcing the six winners. Many of the students are juggling their studies with jobs in the construction industry.

Coleg Llandrillo Cymru Assistant Principal Jackie Doodson spoke about the importance of the awards: “We are here to celebrate student achievements, which have been truly outstanding this year. The support from local industry is essential: from attending focus groups at the College to offering work experience to our students, which offers a relevant interface with industry.”

Josie Webster from Anglesey won the Award for Student of the Year - Construction sponsored by Tarmaster Jones.

Students nominated fellow students for two of the awards and tutors nominated for the remainder. Prizes were awarded to the winners by industry representatives Mark Chapman (Capita Symonds), Matt Jones (Tarmaster Jones) and Richard Griffiths (Mott McDonald) who sponsored the awards.

TJA have just submitted plans for this exciting new contemporary new dwelling in Formby. The new build house for a private client embraces modernists principles of strong horizontal lines and open plan free flowing space set within mature landscaped grounds. TJA are really excited about these proposals and ae looking forward to seeing their plans realised in the not too distant future.

TJA are pleased to announce that the plans for the redevelopment of the rothesay hotel in rhos on sea has been approved by conwy borugh council. The new build scheme comprising 40 apartments, has been designed to sympathetically blend in with the seaside style of architecture but with contemporary design touches.

Planning update-new requirements for planning applications in Wales-Sept 1st ‘09

* All applications for 5 or more dwellings recieved on or after 1 September 2009 must meet Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 and obtain 6 credits under issue Ene1 - Dwellings Emission Rate.
* All applications for 1 or more dwellings recieved on or after 1 September 2010 must meet Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 and obtain 6 credits under issue Ene1 - Dwelling Emission Rate.
* Applications recieved on or after 1 September 2009 for any non-residential development which wil either have a floor space of 1000 sq m or more, or will be carried out on a site having an area of one hectare or more must meet the BREEAM ‘Very Good’ standard and achieve the mandatory credits for ‘Excellent’ under issue Ene1-Reduction of CO2 Emissions.

This new legislation comes into force as the Welsh Assembly begins to implement its ‘One Wales’ agreement, which sets out a sommitment to combat the effects of climate change. A key part of this commitment includes the aspiration for all new builds to be ‘zero carbon’ by 2011.

Research was recently carried out by AECOM to identify the practical implications for local authorities of implementing and helping low and zero carbon developments through the planning system. To view this report, follow the link below:

Rules to make micro-generation easier in Wales come into force (WAG web site)

Installing micro-generation equipment such as solar panels in Welsh homes becomes easier as new planning rules come into force.

Environment Minister Jane Davidson hopes the changes will give households the opportunity to minimise their carbon footprint and to reduce fuel bills.

The aim of the changes is to remove certain types of micro-generation equipment from requiring planning permission, making it easier for individuals and local communities install equipment that will contribute to tackling climate change and lower energy bills.

There will be no requirement to pay planning fees, also reducing the financial burden.

Equipment that comes under the new rules includes:

small scale solar panels
ground source heat pumps, and
biomass flues.

Ms Davidson said:

“A key part to tackling climate change will be lessening our reliance on carbon based energy. This is where micro-generation has a major role to play. It gives households the opportunity to produce their own clean, green energy.

“Here in Wales we have a large share of off gas-grid homes where micro-generation could provide an alternative. We want these new rules to encourage people to consider micro-generation and make it easier for them begin producing their own energy.”

TJA’s exciting seafront residences on the West Shore in Llandudno has recently started on site.The development comprises four contemporary three storey town houses facing the sea having uninterrupted views over to Anglesey.

They should be completed by early next year. Can’t wait!

At the begining of August, TJA acted as one of the sponsors for the annual Rhos-On -Sea golf club Open Week, taking part (albeit unsuccessfully) in a couple of the comps along with some clients during that week. More notably,Rhos golf club has recently started work on their new leisure redevelopment programme which includes new pro-shop, new changing facilites and toilets, and to come next year, a new swimming pool/spa/healthclub and hotel facility, all designed by Tarmaster Jones.

"Plas Coed" Eco-House

Tarmaster Jones’ recently completed Eco-house for their clients Alan Smith and Suzzanne Keegin called ‘Plas coed’, has very recently featured in the Llandudno episode of ‘y Dref Gymreig’ on S4C. The contemporary design of this split level design utilising sustainable timber frame with limewash finish and heat recovery/passive cooling systems, has received a lot of local attention. It was also featured in the November 2008 edition of ‘Build it’,one of the popular self -build journals.
